Smurfit Westrock and 360Energy Sign Agreement for Renewable Energy Supply in Argentina

Updated: 5 days ago

360Energy and Smurfit Westrock sign a renewable energy PPA for the supply of 22 GWh per year over the next five years.

To contribute to the company’s CO2 emissions reduction goal, this is the first renewable energy agreement that Smurfit Westrock has signed in Argentina, choosing 360Energy as its partner. The energy will come from the 360Energy La Rioja Solar Complex, one of the largest solar plants in Argentina dedicated to the MATER market.

Through this agreement, Smurfit Westrock will supply the energy consumption of one of its plants in the Argentina-Chile cluster, located in Bernal, Buenos Aires Province. This plant produces paper from post-consumer fibers, which is then used for corrugated cardboard packaging.

The renewable energy supply will prevent the emission of 10,000 tons of CO2e per year, replacing fossil energy consumption and significantly contributing to the company’s emissions reduction target.

Additionally, the agreement between 360Energy and Smurfit Westrock includes the delivery of I-RECs. These international certificates guarantee that the energy consumed by Smurfit Westrock comes from renewable sources, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability.

The contract was formalized during an event at 360Energy’s Buenos Aires offices, attended by its CEO, Federico Sbarbi Osuna, along with the commercial team led by Ricardo Bernengo, and Rodrigo Longarte, CEO of Smurfit Westrock Argentina & Chile, together with Mario Virili, the company’s Director of Paper & Fibers.

This event not only marked the beginning of a strategic collaboration but also highlighted the commitment of both companies to the transition towards a more sustainable future.

Rodrigo Longarte, CEO of Smurfit Westrock, stated: “This alliance is a milestone in the company’s history in Argentina. As sustainability leaders, we base our sustainable growth goals on three pillars: People, Planet, and Impact Business. This means that we continuously strive to minimize our environmental impact and practice responsible governance, treat our stakeholders with respect, and create an impact business through our products and their manufacturing.”

This is our first agreement, but our vision is to progressively incorporate the rest of our plants operating in the country under this model to achieve our global objectives,” added Mario Virili, Director of Paper & Fibers at Smurfit Westrock.

Meanwhile, Federico Sbarbi Osuna, CEO of 360Energy, stated: “We are pleased to announce the signing of this new power purchase agreement with Smurfit Westrock. Being chosen as their first renewable energy supplier in Argentina is a great honor and a further step in our ability to provide sustainable energy solutions. We are committed to leading the energy transition through solar power and contributing to a more sustainable world, and this alliance reflects that shared commitment between Smurfit Westrock and 360Energy.”
